Charity Spotlight: Harvard Law Attorney Turns Social Entrepreneur to Help Young Women

Harvard law attorney, Dr. Raye Mitchell, has given serious consideration to the dichotomy between the dreams of young girls and the scarcity of resources around them. This matter weighed so heavily on her that she left her private law firm to dedicate herself to inspire and empower young girls (ages 8-18) to live their lives to the fullest as future global leaders. In 2007, Dr. Mitchell made her own dream a reality when she formed The Making a New Reality Foundation.

The foundation is a social entrepreneur program that exists to educate, train, and nourish the growth of girls as global leaders. The foundation also seeks to combat the issues they face today with self-esteem, image, self-acceptance, eating disorders, obesity, and anger management. With the limited access to positive role models and career opportunities in the media, advertising, law, and entertainment industries, The Making a New Reality Foundation’s mission is to provide an affirmative image for young girls.

The G.U.R.L.S. Rock Leadership Program, a sect of the foundation which stands for “Growth, Unity, Respect, Leadership, Success”, was launched in 2010.  “We need to change the conversation about how we define and engage girls as leaders. Their story is not all negative statistics,” said Mitchell. The program’s goal is to raise the bar of excellence for girls in order to break down the barriers to their success. Dr. Raye sees future leaders in these girls and invests all of her energy into a positive program for their personal development.

On Saturday, September 10, 2011, G.U.R.L.S. Rock will host its second annual San Francisco Bay Area Summit for girls 12 to 18+. Program topics will include Financial Literacy, Nutrition & Healthy Living, along with a Career and Education Forum. Also, the summit will host a special workshop on volunteerism and service to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. Among the expert workshop leaders are Tovi Scruggs, M.Ed., founder of ASA Educational Services, Inc. and Issa Rae, creator of The (Mis)Adventure of Awkward Black Girl TV Series. Special guests include TV personality and publisher of OaklandSeen.com, Aimee Allison, and KBLX 102.9FM Radio personality, Nikki Thomas.
