Truth be told Akon has always had a heart for giving, he wasn’t on my radar last year, he was quiet but I can see why he was cooking up something great and we all know greatness takes time. The Hip Hop Mogul Rapper/Singer Akon has launched an ambitious endeavor that aims to improve the lives of over one million people in Africa – yes one million people and I love it. The lack of electricity is currently a major problem in Africa. A significant number of households in rural areas and even urban cities do not have access to electricity. This is a real obstacle to Africa’s Sustainable Development, can you imagine a day without electricity?
His new initiative “Akon Lighting Africa” hopes to bring electricity to one million households by the end of 2014 to help promote energy sustainability and sufficiency throughout the continent. in partnership with Give1Project and ADS Global Corporation SA.
The project will consist of the installation of solar equipment in households and promote their energy sufficiency that also will allow millions of children to have access to electricity and improve their education through extended study hours. In that regard, the American superstar is touring nine African countries (Senegal, Mali, Guinea Conakry, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Congo and the Ivory Coast to meet with leaders about the project. I could so see Akon being president of one of these countries one day soon can’t you?
Akon, who is Senegalese-American, will travel and meet with leaders in nine countries in nine days to discuss the project including Senegal, Mali, Guinea Conakry, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Congo and the Ivory Coast.
