BCG Fights for Literacy with Book Drive Campaign!

Without a doubt literacy is a problem that affects our entire society and not just individuals. America spends more money on literacy than any other country in the world. Currently, the federal government spends about $10 Billion every year on literacy. But it is not working… Studies have shown that the percentage of American children who are able to read well hasn’t improved at all in the last 25 years. BCG is championing this cause now with our BCG Book Drive going on now through May 1st! We are collecting new and used books for youth programs across the country to encourage summer reading. If you collect 10 or more books BCG will pay for shipping.

About The Cause
:
Literacy—the ability to read and write—is essential to fully developing a sense of well-being and citizenship. Children who are solid readers perform better in school, have a healthy self-image, and become lifelong learners, adding to their viability in a competitive world.

Experts estimate that nearly 40 percent of U.S. 4th graders do not achieve basic levels of reading proficiency. The number is higher among low-income families, certain minority groups, and English language learners. The tragedy is that these children may never fully participate in American society. Their employment prospects grow dim and the chance for anti-social behavior increases. In short, they will be viewed as “problems.”

Some Facts on Illiteracy
:

  • 42 Million American adults can not read.
  • 50 Million adults are unable to read at higher than a fourth or fifth grade level.
  • Only 11% of black males in the 4th grade read at or above a 4th grade level.
  • 85% of all juvenile offenders rate as functionally or marginally illiterate.
  • 20% of high school seniors can be classified as being functionally illiterate at the time they graduate.
  • 70% of US prisoners are classified as illiterate.
  • 43% of people who love below the poverty line are functionally illiterate.
