Charity Spotlight: Clovis North High School-African American Student Union

Clovis North High School-African American Student Union is a 501(c)3 via the Bronco Foundation. A small group of about 70 students the organization recently started a parent Group to encourage parent involvement in the School. The school opened in August 2006 and to date the Clovis North High School-African American Student Union most productive club on the campus!

The Club motto is: “Affecting Change One Student at a time”. We feel that if WE change the way we feel about OURSELVES, that we can change the campus as well and the embedded racism that surrounds us. The AASU is one of the most respected clubs by the students, staff and District. The students have since started a Scholarship fund to assist our graduating Seniors with College expenses. Each year the organization holds it’s annual Scholarship dinner, where they bring in a Keynote speaker to speak to our community to empower and
encourage. In 2009, the group was honored to have Dr. Steve Perry, CNN & Essence Education Contributor, and this year the Chancellor for the State Center Community College District [SCCCD], Dr. Deborah Blue.

In a city where the largest school district in our area is touting a 37% drop out rate amongst minority students, the club is committed to encouraging their peers that they too can make it!

The kids are hosting a Community wide event next month to address the Counties 37% Drop-Out rate for African Americans. The guest speaker will be Jeff Johnson [MSNBC/TheGrio.com]. The event will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 2:00pm at Fresno City College. The cost is $10, the organization is also offering a FREE Educational Fair for all students and parents to obtain information about public and private intervention assistance services as well as College & Scholarship Application help. Several local colleges will also be present to encourage enrollment and discourage high school dropouts.

They are living their motto: Affecting change one student at a time.

What a marvelous organization! The club is always seeking speakers as well as funding for it’s many projects. If you are interested in helping the Clovis North High School-African American Student Union please contact:
