Charity Spotlight: The Better Detroit Youth Movement

Celebrating its fifth year, The Better Detroit Youth Movement (BDYM) is a non-profit coalition of great groups and incredible individuals committed to working together to improve the quality of life and learning for Detroit’s young generation. Together, we’ve engaged, encouraged and enriched an estimated 35,000 youth, teens and young adults in and around Detroit. The organization is committed to working together with communities, parents, schools and students to improve the quality of life and learning for Detroit’s children.

The organization holds weekly meetings every Tuesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., at 17178 Livernois Avenue, to hear from the BDYM’s powerful youth advisory board, and learn about a variety of initiatives and events. On August 25th, BDYM held a city-wide HIV/AIDS awareness and youth resource event at Don Bosco Hall. Highlights of the free event included a youth resource fair and high school step show featuring step teams that created performances with themes related to STD/HIV prevention.

One of their primary goals will be to improve communication among Detroit’s youth service providers by developing a database that will help enhance delivery of services, and serve as the basis for production of a resource guide to provide comprehensive services and solutions for Detroit youth.

BDYM know’s the promise and potential of the city of Detroit and it’s children.  If you do too, let’s move our children forward together.

Citizen volunteerism, and youth engagement and participation are key components of the BDYM. The organization believes that by fostering higher levels of communication, cooperation and collaboration among citizens and communities, while seeking out areas where they can better work together, they will achieve greater success with and for our young generation.
