Black History Month is a remembrance of the events in the history of the African diaspora. It actually started as Negro History Week in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. The goal of Black History Week was to educate the American people about African-Americans’ cultural backgrounds and reputable achievements.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American pilots in the U.S. armed forces.The Tuskegee Airmen are depicted in the G.I. Joe action figure series.

Oprah Winfrey became the first female U.S. billionaire in 2003.

Harold Washington was an American lawyer and politician who became the first African-American mayor of Chicago.

In 2008, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt became the first man in history to set three world records in a single Olympic games.

In 1899, African-American golf fan Dr. George Franklin Grant received a patent for the world’s first golf tee.
Joseph Winters invented a fire escape ladder in 1878. Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s home run record when he hit his 715th home run in 1974. He set a Major League record with 755 home runs in his career.

In 2002, Vonetta Flowers became the first African-American to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympic games.

Booker T. Washington was the first African-American invited to the White House.

Lonnie G. Johnson, an engineer for NASA, invented the Super Soaker water gun the number one selling toy in America in 90’s.
