Mentoring Program Aims to Help Black Males Graduate from College.

African-American Male Mentorship

Going to college can be a huge life change. And sometimes any help you can get can really make a difference. That’s what Trevor Jones is doing. He created the African-American Male Mentorship Program at the University of Houston-Downtown to help make those difficult college years a little bit easier to manage. The power of mentoring is a force to be reckoned with and there’s something to be said about black males mentoring other black males for success.

“What we found was that a lot of our young men, especially our African-American males are not graduating from college,’ said Jones. ‘So what the program does is we kind of give them that push. We give them that voice on campus that there’s someone here that can help you.”

Carlin Johnson, a business and accounting major, has seen a positive influence since he’s joined the program.“Many call it an organization, but I really call it a support system,” said Johnson.

It’s what that support that Trevor hopes young, African-American males can achieve success during and after college. Check out the video below courtesy of NewsFix.
