Miami Community Volunteers Needed for T.R.I.P Day of Service.

WHAT: T.R.I.P., a national not-for-profit organization, is seeking volunteers to join their Day of Service on Saturday, October 6. The volunteers will put their gardening skills to work at Roots In The City, a community-development and healthy-eating initiative where freshly grown produce is grown and offered free to the community through giveaway programs. Activities include planting seedlings, spreading topsoil and fertilizer, weeding, etc. The day will be highlighted by a tour of the city of Overtown — the oldest African-American neighborhood in Miami — led by historian Dr. Marvin Dunn, founder of Roots In The City. The project will start at 9:00 a.m. and end at 2 p.m.

T.R.I.P. volunteers will also participate in a closed volunteer project at Miami Rescue Mission on Friday, October 5. They will spend the day landscaping the grounds, painting the facility, and food to the shelter residents. This project has already met its volunteer capacity.

WHEN: Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. – 2 p.m.

WHERE: Roots In The City
164 NW 20th Street, Unit 106
Miami, Florida 33127-4803

REGISTER: Visit www.tripusa.org to register as a local volunteer. Look for the “Join us and Volunteer” button. A small participation fee of $10.00 is requested from each volunteer, which includes lunch and beverages, plus a T.R.I.P. t-shirt and giveaways.

A brief volunteer orientation and small reception will also take place on Thursday, October 4 at the Eden Roc Renaissance Marriott at 7:00 p.m.

About T.R.I.P. (Travel. Rebuild. Inspire. Progress.)
T.R.I.P. (www.tripusa.org) is a not-for-profit organization that helps rebuild communities in need. It consists of concerned citizens from across the country who combine their love of travel and community service for the good of improving lives. The mission of the organization is to travel to predominantly low-income, African-American communities to help rebuild neighborhoods and improve the quality of life for local residents. T.R.I.P. was created in November 2006 after two childhood friends gathered a group of family and friends to travel with them to New Orleans, LA to assist with post-Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. In 2011, T.R.I.P. worked with the City of Miami Gardens to co-host a Day of Service where volunteers helped to build a community park in the Vista Verde neighborhood. The majority of T.R.I.P. volunteers are business professionals who have dedicated their vacation or leisure time to community projects. The volunteers represent all walks of life and the T.R.I.P. network has grown to more than 500 individuals.
