  2. Bobbi Evans-Truesdale

I would like to nominate Brother Jeff Fard. Here is a person who is very active in our community. Brother Jeff has always been a giving and Super Hero to so many young men and Women. Thanks so much, Bobbi

  3. I would like to nominate Bishop D.L.Johnson for being a hero to many children here in SC and in NY and FL. Bishop and his wife has taken children out of the fostercare system and reunited them with their mothers, providing them with housing, food, schooling and intensive case management services. This change gave these families a second chance in life. Generational curses have been broken through the efforts and unyeilding preserverance of Bishop and his wife. A hero is someone who demonstrates courage-to fight against all odds…Bishop D.L. Johnson is a hero in a little town called Alcolu, South Carolina where big things are happening!

  4. The individual in which I would like to nominate is Bishop D. L. Johnson he has been a rock for me and many youth and their families. This man has a vision to develop a small community in South Carolina, named Alcolu. He will not take “no for an answer” against all odds he has continue to stand and fight. He and his wife has exhausted all of their personal funds trying to pay all the mortgages and bills. Currently he is CEO of Have Faith Community Development Corporation which runs a private community school which serves as a “second chance” for youth who are at risk of being expelled from the public school system. Bishop Johnson finds a way to include every child and make sure no one is left behind. In this community there is a home that serves as a model home during day, but at night woman and their children who have been abused in one way or the other live there. Over five families live in this home, I am dedicated to helping others because I once was one of those children who had lost all hope, but Bishop Johnson and his wife took me in and showed me how to live. I am now devoted to helping others.

  5. When I hear the word community leader i automatically think of the works done by Bishop D.L Johnson. He is a community leader further more he empowers individuals to dig deep and do there best. His motivates young people because he believes that we are the future. I am 16 and through his leadership i have graduated high school and am on my way to college. He not only inspires me but many other young individuals. He sacrifices so much and looks for nothing in return but for us to “make it”. I love the unending love and hope he has towards the youth. Bishop Johnson is an outstanding community leader and is making a difference not only in Alcolu South Carolina but across the world!

  6. Bishop D.L Johnson should win the community leader because he always does things for the community. He gives single mothers and their children a place to live. Bishop Johnson also helps homeless veterans. He does so much wonderful things for the community and that is why he should win the position as best community leader.

  7. Deshawn Washington

I would like to nominate Bishop D.L. Johnson to be a community hero because he has done so much for his community. He has taken children who was in foster care and reunited them with their mother. He has also opened a school for all children but also targeting the children who was rejected from the public school like me. He has created homes for the financially impaired and created jobs for the same ones. Bishop D.L. Johnson accomplishments are too numerous to even list in one comment but I want to show him my appreciation by electing him as Alcolu’s community hero because I know for a fact that he saved me.

  8. Bishop Dwayne Johnson is a hero to my children and I and so many others, he has given us a hope to have a better life. He and his wife took families that were broken and abused to heal and to feel what a family feels like. He gave a place to live to those who were homeless and gave chances to those who were given up on if that is not being a community Hero than what is?

  9. I would whole heartily nominate Bishop D L Johnson, the man on a mission and the vision behind the Have Faith Community Development Corporation and the Alcolu Revitalization District (ARD). Bishop Johnson has not just talked about community development he has put all of his personal and family assets on the line to rebuild a small mill town in rural SC. The Bishop mortgage all of his proprieties and raised north of 3 million dollars to secure 1,000acres of prime real estate along the infamous SC I-95 corridor of shame, with the goal of tackling all the community, education and economic development issues that exist in the corridor. He has assembled a group of faithful volunteers and partnered with local, state and federal gov’t agencies to establish the Alcolu Revitalization District. Within the district his companies have built schools, developed homes for single mothers, orphans, elderly and homeless veterans. The project is one of the largest of its type in the SE. True Hero!

  10. Many may say a hero is someone who saves them or someone else. I am not saying they are wrong but sometimes heroes need to be saved too. Well my hero, Bishop D.L. Johnson has saved many people and not one time asked to be saved. He has saved me from all of the storms in my life. I guess it was meant for Bishop Johnson to save me. If he did not save well I am not sure where I would be. Now I really believe that it is time for my hero to be saved and I know this is my chance to save him!! No matter what happened I believe he has saved many people’s life including mine and he really needs to be saved.

  11. Bishop Johnson is a good community leader because he is always helping and providing for others. He has been a wonderful help in my life since I was a young girl. He has started a school to help young people who need a second chance. He keeps you moving and shows you how to be a better person. The school that he has started helps me to understand better. Now I am in the 9th grade at the age of 13. I am going to graduate early. This is why nominate Bishop Johnson for a good community leader.

  12. Bishop Dwayne Johnson gave my family and I a place to live. The school said I could not read or write, so open a private school so I could learn more. Thank You Bishop for being my community leader.

  17. Dear BCG,

I would like to nominate Mr. James Jones. He started the organization Simply United Together in May 2011 on Facebook. In this short period it has grown to nearly 13,000 members! We also have 14 other pages of varied interest including S.U.T Prayer Warriors, S.U.T Encouragement Vitamin, S.U.T Career Information, S.U.T. Community Service, just to name a few. We currently have chapters in 48 states, with a cabinet of over 300 members, all volunteers!

We recently had a member post that she was considering ending her life! Mr. Jones shutdown the room to any further posts so that members could reach out to this sister with love and encouragement. There were members in her area who actually tried to find out her whereabouts to be sure she was alright.

Here is more about the organization and his vision:

The “Simply United Together (S.U.T.)”, LLC, is a social and community networking organization with a strong emphasis on commitment to community service. The S.U.T. social networking group was created to bring together like-minded individuals from all over the world representing diversity in culture, belief systems and ethnicity.

S.U.T. was founded in May 2011 by James Jones, Sr, CEO. It began as an online social forum on Facebook, which is steadily growing with well over 12,000 members nationwide however it has transitioned into a viable civic and community organization residing in 47 states. It is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, with its steady growth and eye on even broader horizons, S.U.T. wants to take its mission and message all over the world. S.U.T. plans to host several Meet-and-Greet activities and sponsor community service events in throughout the country.

Simply United Together is focused on investing in our communities. We believe in the intangible benefits of giving back. Our Chief Executive Officer, James Jones founded this organization under the premises that relationships, community and giving back are a vital part to living a full and rewarding life.

  18. I would like to nominate James Jones Sr., CEO of Simply United Together (SUT) as your BCG Community Hero. Here is an excerpt of why:

Simply United Together (S.U.T.) Organizational Biography

The “Simply United Together (S.U.T.) is a social and community networking organization with a strong emphasis on community service goals and objectives. The S.U.T. social networking group was created to bring together like-minded individuals from all over the world and ethnicity’s who can converse on a wide array of subjects with thoughtful and respectful commentary. Our motto is “Different People, Same Purpose, Simply United”. This is a place where members can speak their mind, seek advice, laugh, and joke without judgment.

S.U.T. was founded in May 2011 by James Jones, Sr, CEO. It originated on Facebook and has steadily grown to well over 13,000 members. Its headquarters are in Atlanta,Georgia, with it’s steady growth and eye on even broader horizons, S.U.T. wants to take it’s mission and message to the next level, the Internet. S.U.T. not only seeks to continue its connection with its members on Facebook and on a multitude of levels to include merchandising and events. S.U.T. plans to have several Meet-and-Greet venues and community service events in different parts of the country. This will allow us to interact with each member on a more personal level. While giving back to our local communities across the country. Mr Jones believes that being a blessing to someone else is the most important thing a human being can do.

Four and half months and 13,000+ members later, S.U.T. has performed community events such as feed 100 families donations all over the U.S., we are conducting clothes drives, turkey giveaways, voter registration drives, cell phone donations for battered women’s shelters, and my personal favorite, Gentlemen’s Day. On these designated days, all of the men in S.U.T around the country will put on suits and ties, bring their sons and perform random community service, such as carrying senior citizens’ and lady’s groceries to their car, cleaning up trash, assisting in retirement homes, etc. The reason for this is to teach our youth that there is nothing wrong with being a good person and helping others. We are very concerned with our youth because they are our future. Since there are so many examples of negativity for them to see, we want to counteract that negativity and demonstrate what a positive role model looks like, and who better to demonstrate that than fathers!

I have been with S.U.T. since its inception, and never have I seen one man motivate so many others that they will put aside what they are doing to assist one man and his vision, and that’s what this group does for James everyday. Although we continue to find ways to give back and uplift the community, our greatest accomplishment was saving a woman’s life. She had given up and was about to commit suicide. After thousands of words of encouragement, and one of our members going to her house to intervene, she is still with us today doing much better with a renewed outlook on life. If that alone isn’t reason to be considered a hero, I don’t know what is, and none of that would have been possible without James and the creation of Simply United Together!

  20. As a cabinet member of Simply United Together (S.U.T.), founded in May 2011, I would like to nominate James Jones, Sr., Founder/President/CEO of this continuously growing organization. Through his efforts, he has created a venue for over 13,000 members to congregate and share their joys, accomplishments, pains, have fun, contribute their opinions on a variety of topics, as well as posting topics for whatever is on one’s mind. He has spearheaded numerous community involvement activities with many more to follow. He has helped to bring thousands of people together who would have otherwise never met. His efforts have not gone unnoticed, as S.U.T. as been invited to attend next year’s 2012 Democratic National Convention — pretty impressive, huh! We are so proud of this honor, and we are proud of him.

For some of the varied interests of it’s members, we have rooms that are geared specifically for the Queens of S.U.T. as well as those for spiritual guidance, advertisements, personal interests, tips on fitness, and food/recipes, just to name a few. For the person who sits at home bored with nothing to do, once you are added to the membership, all of that changes. S.U.T. is full of purpose, passion, and elation. We have so many members who are dedicated to this volunteer organization for life and who will defend it to the end–and I am one.

More importantly, he has created a worldwide FAMILY who is there to support one another in numerous ways. Through our meet-and-greets that have occurred and the ones being planned, these functions, for starters, have resulted in an even closer bond for many of us who have met in person, and…we anxiously await for the next event to occur in each of our respective areas.

To close, I sincerely appreciate the opportunity James provided me to be a part of this movement and organization. For this, I have gained a ton of of sisters and brothers nationwide. We are..SIMPLY UNITED TOGETHER….DIFFERENT PEOPLE, SAME PURPOSE, SIMPLY UNITED

Thank you for the opportunity to share my justification in nominating MR. JAMES JONES, SR. FOR THE COMMUNITY HERO AWARD.

I would like to nominate Brandi Matthews, Founder and CEO of Perfectly Imperfect Inc., as a community hero. Perfectly Imperfect Inc. is a non-profit organization that was founded on July 20, 2010 and has continued to strive since then. The organization has made appearances at several events and had some of their own. Perfectly Imperfect Inc. is here to make every girl into a beautiful woman inside and out. Perfectly Imperfect Inc. volunteers in the community, teaches the basics of hygiene, promotes education and so much more. It is here to give young ladies hope and show them they can be anyone they want if they stay focused. I am the President of Perfectly Imperfect Inc. and have been with the organization for over a year. The organization and group of girls have done more for me than I could imagine possible. I have been taught to love myself because there are people who love me, I am beautiful even with all my imperfections and I do have a vivid future ahead of me. Where you come from does not define who you are. Brandi is truly an amazing and inspiring person. She has made her dream come true and works everyday to keep it alive. She does not do this for herself or recognition, she does everything for all the girls in this organization and all the ones in the world. She has touched my heart and so many more. I am proud to build myself to be a remarkable person one day because of her. She is my idol and I hope to help girls in the future like she has.

  23. sharon hobbs matthews

I want to nominate Ms. Brandi Nicole Matthews,president/ceo of perfectly imperfect inc for community hero. She is truly an amazing young lady with a passion to help our young girls of today. The sacrifices I’ve seen her make just to get the girls in her organization to get on and stay on the right tracks are just a small fraction of what she is really made of. She gives her all and then some to the girls. Day and night she is always thinking of ways to motivate them. As I watched her call day after day and week after week to department of transportation to adopt a highway, just to give the girls more community involvement, it really touched my heart to see over and over again just how dedicated she is to what she do.
Brandi graduated with honors from Elizebeth City State University with a major in Criminat Justice. I then watched her put her career on hold to assist her brother in opening up his funeral home and she gave countless hours to that business serving the comunity. Then as I watched her passion unfold to the young girls in the community, she again chose not to go to Law School but reach out to our young girls, our furture. This just shows her commitment to helping others.
She is such an outstanding young lady; and she practice what she preach.
And in light of her being an instructor through Wayne Community College, Brandi still finds time to give 100% to her grandmother that has been dignosed with Alhezimer’s disease.
Yes I am more than proud to nomiate her and to be her mother.

  24. LeCarlous T.G. Jones

I would like to nominate Brandi N. Matthews. I’ve seen Ms. Matthews throughout the community at countless events. She’s supportive of other organizations as well as the people involved. Alwas courteous, informative and well dressed. I can truly say that she is the leading the way tremendously for the next generation of young women business leaders, students, teachers, lawyers, doctors and mothers. I believe in her program completely. In these times of high unemployment rates, never ending inflation, mortgage crises and teen pregnancy, teen drug abuse and terrorist activity, it would almost seem impossible that young women would step back to look at the world to see what she could do to change it. In a world where we are viewed as always having to achieve perfection, Brandi Matthews is a first defense in keeping these young ladies focused, driven, determined and loved. The ambition she demonstrates with untiring will to quit is a Perfectly Imperfect example to us all. Please I encourage you to vote!

I Would Like To Nominate Desiree Venn Frederic, for her outstanding community service with fashion, arts and entertainment. As well as setting the tone for professional for upcoming aspiring moguls in the DMV Area.

  26. Cassie

I’d like to nominate Alvin Brook’s and organization Ad-Hoc group against crime. Mr.Brooks was the first to seriously begin to try and address crime in the urban section of our communitites, he stepped up to the plate after we continued to see gang-and drug related homicide multiply within each city. Both Kansas City, Mo and Kansas City, Ks experienced violent-senseless killings, and a host of other crimes due to these activities. We as a community were releaved to see someone from our midst meaning a member of our communities take up the mantle without wavering or even taking thought of his own personal safety to ensure that the lives of others, would stop being taken without so much as a plea from within the community to stop the senseless killings by addressing the members of each indivual household. I saw time and time again as did all of us as a community whenever there was a murder Mr.Brooks and his group Ad-Hoc would be there making plea’s on television, radio and even in the streets making their presence known, that no more would we as citizen’s stand idly by afraid locked behind the door’s of our homes. For fear if we dare call the police we would be next in line, and Ad-Hoc went even futher as time went on and we begin to look to this group to aid us in marches against violence in our communities, schools and anywhere, later they would add the candle-light vigil’s which we all came to love, it showed that we hadn’t forgot the person, family members of that person killed and it allowed us whom other-wise wouldn’t have said a word to finally speak the words we’d wanted to speak every time we had to watch, see or hear about yet another senseless killing, and Mr. Brooks and the group didn’t stop there they rallied to aid in teenager’s whom left home without parent’s no all. They should be really commended for improving relation’s in the communities ,with the local law enforcement agencies. Mr.Brooks garnered the trust of youth’s and their parent’s so much that when murders had taken place it was Brooks whom was called and his group when one wanted to turn him or her self into the authorities, Ad-Hoc also set-up a reward fund to aid in the coming forth of information, leading to the arrest and convictions of person or person’s involved and to assist the families of the victims with many needs after their loved ones death, so I nominate The Ad-Hoc group against crime and Mr. Alvin Brooks.

  29. Peas In Their Pods mission is to bring awareness to children in the African American community who go missing sometimes for decades. Children in the African American Community do not get as much media attention that is so warrented. Everyday Peas In Their Pods notify the community when a child goes missing. It is imperative that this information gets out as soon as possible.

Peas In Their Pods Mission Statement:

Peas In Their Pods is a not-for-profit organization that provides a specific service to those who have missing loved ones. The organization is self-funded, and is comprised of a team of volunteers who work diligently to assist families during their time of greatest need. We are here to help parents find their missing children. We do not take the place of the Amber Alert System. We simply pick up where they leave off or never engage due to program criteria. Peas In Their Pods Organizational goal takes pride in helping to find missing children of color, fight against child abuse, and provide information to the public. er.

  30. I believe the Black Community Leader Awarded should be embraced by the ever-passionate for the people in the community, Composer/Writer/Musician/Artist/Single Parent Brian O’Neal. He is truely a giving and sharing person to the homeless in his community and abroad in his travels as a musician. Proceeds to his organization tells us how honorable he is as one hundred percent is for the giving to the needy. He has effortlessly built a foundation of sharing from ground zero, by literally putting himself in the shoes of the homeless to better understand their immediate needs, he eventually developed the DOfoundation.net in Detroit. The organization is in much need right now as he continues to be the voice for the homeless humans.

visit the DOFoundation.net to better understand why this good samaritan deserves leadership award.

  31. Michele Standifer-Bak

I nominate the DO Foundation – Midwest, Brian O’Neal and Kelly Adolph’s foundation. The DO Foundation is giving back to the homeless in our Detroit community. I have had the pleasure of meeting both Kelly and Brian and have visited their office. I am very touched by their selfless act of kindness to those in need in our community.

  32. I would like to salute all of theses organizations that have the heart to step
out and make the contributions that they do. But I have to place my vote with
Op.Pa too help fight homelessness among teens.
