The giving never seems to end when you think of media mogul, author and philanthropist Steve Harvey. The Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation in partnership with the Open Society Foundation’s Campaign for Black Male Achievement is launching an initiative called the “Steve Harvey Mentoring Campaign,” encompassing mentor recruitment drives to inspire men to become mentors, and impact the lives of African-American boys nationwide, with current drives scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 27th and in Chicago on Saturday, November 17th .The Steve Harvey Mentoring Campaign will continue its drive for more mentors in more cities throughout 2013.
On November 17, 2012 in Chicago, Steve Harvey and Family Feud host, author and radio host Steve Harvey will kick off a powerful new initiative driving the need for mentoring around the country, with the launch of the Steve Harvey Mentoring Campaign. Created in partnership between The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation and the Open Society Foundation’s Campaign for Black Male Achievement, the Steve Harvey Mentoring Campaign is leading the way to create and expand stronger mentoring relationships impacting African-American boys around the country, with nationwide events to inspire men to become mentors. Driving a nationwide initiative for 2012 and 2013, the Steve Harvey Mentoring Campaign will host mentor recruitment drives in Los Angeles on October 27th and in Chicago on November 17th, with additional mentor drives scheduled for 2013 in Philadelphia, New York City, Washington D.C., Dallas, New Orleans, and Atlanta.
An unforgettable experience that creates a lasting impact on both mentors and their mentees, Steve Harvey is launching a call to action at the Chicago event, for men ages 18 and older to join the Steve Harvey Mentoring Campaign, become a mentor and inspire African-American boys to achieve their maximum potential, empower their communities, and develop their purpose and leadership. Featuring informational sessions and more at the mentor recruitment drives, the Steve Harvey Mentoring Campaign continues to expand upon The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation’s mentoring initiatives, which has served over 1000 young men and women around the country so far with their cornerstone mentoring programs for young men and young women.

I came to this article from a Tweet I saw just a few minutes ago. I clicked in with the intention of volunteering to be a mentor if I met the criteria.
Although I don’t meet the criteria because I am a woman, I am so happy to see this program begin, and I commend Steve Harvey for starting it.
I know I might make some people angry by saying this, but I have no problem with the mentors that are sought being only men. African American boys need to learn how to be men from African American MEN. I am taking nothing away from sisters that are raising boys alone. In fact, I was a single mother (although my only child is a girl) and I know how hard it is to be a single parent. I also know many women have and are continuing to be a wonderful parent to their sons.
But I still feel every boy needs the ongoing presence of a positive and active male role model in his life. The most loving and dedicated mother in the world by definition cannot teach her son how to be a man from personal experience.
I have a six year old grandson who fortunately does have his father in his life on a daily basis. But still I worry about my grandson every day because I see what is happening to young black males in American society. I think the Black community has to take some definite strides to address this problem and I applaud Steve Harvey for stepping up to the plate.
As an African American author I have made numerous speeches at schools and libraries in support of literacy, and I have come in contact with many Black boys who are floundering. I feel the optimum time to step in to help them is while they are still boys, and I feel a concerned and committed Black male influence in their lives is imperative.
I wish the “Steve Harvey Mentoring Campaign” much success and Godspeed!
