Eight years after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, the level of homelessness in the area is still higher than pre-storm levels. Former LSU Star, 2005 WNBA Rookie of the Year, a Nancy Lieberman Award Winner and 2009 WNBA Champion, Temeka Johnson looks to bring hope to the homeless by providing hot meals to Kenner’s at  An Assist of Hope to be held on Saturday, November 23rd.

“Every homeless person is someone’s mother, brother, father, cousin, uncle, aunt, sister or child and deserves dignity and respect. Many are disabled; suffer from mental illness, substance abuse, PDSD, depression, debilitating health conditions, etc. Regardless of their issues, they are still humans, and should be treated as such. These issues should not set them apart, because at any moment it can happen to any of us, I’m blessed to be in a position to provide a kind gesture of a hot meal to send a message of hope and ultimately shows somebody who cares, that I care and it all begins at home, in my hometown of Kenner,” says Johnson.

The event will be held at Oakland Baptist Church in Kenner, Louisana; right outside of New Orleans. The event will begin at 11:00am until 2:00pm and looks to feed nearly 200 residents of the town of Kenner. The event is free and open to the community.

Temeka Johnson founded the HOPE Foundation,  a 501c3 Nonprofit organization, which stands for “Heaven Opens People’s Eyes”  in 2009. The H.O.P.E. Foundation’s mission is to provide inspiration to youth, families, and communities to help them to lead a more healthy life style. H.O.P.E. will provide the tools necessary to increase, awareness, exposure, physical activity, and a unified spirit throughout communities.
