World Hunger Leadership Challenge Encourages Youth to Lead The Change!

USA Today Foundation’s World Hunger Challenge

I’m in love with all the unique ways foundations are creating to get our youth involved in solving some of the world’s toughest issues. I’m encouraging all my teachers, community leaders, parents and friends to share this opportunity with youth in your community, it’s a win-win!

The World Hunger Leadership Challenge was created by the USA TODAY Charitable Foundation and the Lift a Life Foundation, with assistance from the Yum! Foundation, to encourage middle and high school students to hone leadership skills by completing a service-learning project that solves hunger issues.

Here are the details you need to know! All interested students and or teams must:

  • Be full-time students in grades 7-12 of a public, private or charter middle school or high school and between the ages of 13-18 years
  • Be residents of one of the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia or Guam
  • Complete all ten Lead2Feed lessons
  • Select a 501(c)(3) hunger charity with which to partner for their project
  • Work in teams of at least three
  • Have a teacher or adult advisor work with them during their project
All Entries must include:
  • A teacher-submitted online entry form.
  • The teams’ written or video overview of their project including:
  • Identification of the non-profit organization (which must be a tax-exempt public charity organization in the United States, described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code*) which that the Team supports in a service project focusing on solving hunger related issues.
  • A statement of their goal.
  • Description of the team’s proposed solution and action plan
  • Statement of results of the Team’s project to date (or projected results if the project is still in action).
  • Written submissions should be between 500-1,000 words, typed. Acceptable file formats: .doc, .docx, or .pdf.
  • Video submissions should not exceed 5 minutes in length. Acceptable file formats: .wmv. .mov, .mp4, .3gp, .qt, .avi, .asf, .mpg, or .flv.

All entries must be submitted by April 19, 2013, a panel of judges from all of the foundations will judge the entries based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstration of “Strategy, Structure and Culture” — 30%
  • Strategy: Clearly state what you set out to accomplish
  • Structure: Show how you put the right resources and processes in place to meet your goal, execute your plan
  • Culture: Tell us/show us how you created a supportive, engaging and encouraging team environment
  • Creativity and innovation of the solution — 35%
  • Impact on ending hunger — 35%
$500,000 in prizes will be awarded to the non-profit organizations the winning teams supported as a part of their projects.

• 1 team will win $25,000 for their hunger project charity

• 10 teams will win $5,000 each for their hunger project charity

• 425 teams will win $1,000 for their hunger project charity
